Down for Whatever: Two Years Ago I Started a Sex-Positive Podcast
Yesterday was the two year anniversary of the start of Down for Whatever. Though I have been publishing shows in fits and starts, this project has never ceased to be a source of happiness and strength for me. Producing the show has been as challenging as it has been rewarding. It has given me a platform for sharing stories and it has given me the opportunity to be someone that people feel they can trust and open up to about their sex lives. I'd like to tell the story of how it started.
In my last year of graduate school, I was unsure about what to do when I finished my Masters. All I knew was that I wanted to be in a room with people, talking about sex and hopefully one day getting paid for it. I had no idea how this was going to be possible, there was no model for me to mimic. After having a heart-to-heart with a friend of mine, she suggested I start discussion groups. She thought I was great at making people feel comfortable when talking about sex and that providing a space would be so helpful for those who may have never had the chance to discuss sex freely. I started planning Sex Salons immediately. Friends agreed to let me use their spaces to host and I recruited as many people as I could. Mostly my friends and friends of friends came. It was a really fun experiment of "what would happen if...?".
Looking back at that particular time in my life, I would have to say I was on fleek. I mean, not to toot my own horn, but I was doing the damn thing: working full-time, going to school, dating, putting together these Sex Salons. AND THEN, I had an idea to start a sex podcast. I started telling people that I wanted to do this. Responses were mixed, but I just put it out there that if anyone knew someone who I should interview to send them my way. As a former musician I knew I could work out the technical stuff along the way.
Along came Mr. T! I couldn't have asked for a better first guest. He is intriguing, with lots of wonderful layers. He doesn't hold back and he leaves you wanting more. I can't have favorites, but because he was my first, he holds a very special place in my heart. I didn't start out with the best equipment or the perfect technique. I had no idea what a production schedule was, but I was sure that I could make something that people would enjoy and learn from. Please join me in re-visiting my very first episode of Down for Whatever: Mr. T Tells All.
